Inspiration and Acceptance Books
Listed here is an interesting collection of books dealing with accepting your body and your weight. All of the books featured in this section are written by those who have been there and have found the path that led them to be able to accept their bodies and be content with the image they see in the mirror.
FAT!SO? : Because You Don't Have to Apologize for Your Size
By Marilyn Wann
First and foremost, this book was hilarious. We laughed so hard at times we nearly cried. Wann gives a strikingly intelligent view of why women (and men) should accept their bodies for what they are. If you're just beginning to try to accept your size, this book is a must read. The book was wonderfully written and hard to put down. The only problem is that it eventually ends!
Just the Weigh You Are: How to Be Fit and Healthy, Whatever Your Size
By Steven Jonas, Linda Konner (Contributor), Barry Estabrook (Editor)
The theme of the book is that whether or not you are genetically able to get slim, you can get healthy and feel good about your body. Checklists that personalize the information for you accompany the motivating information provided in this book. Jonas and Konner provide encOuragement for people of all sizes to make little changes in their lives that will lead to improved health, and not necessarily weight loss. We found this book to be a good primer for those looking to get healthy and not necessarily get thin.
Bountiful Women: Large Women's Secrets for Living the Life They Desire
By Bonnie Bernell, Carmen Renee Berry (Introduction)
Bernell addresses the practical issues so many overweight and obese women face on a daily basis. The book encOurages readers to accept their bodies and offers advice on how to deal with parental and employer disapproval. What we enjoyed were the clear and practical suggestions for building self-esteem and coping with everyday problems. Our only complaint was that the book didn't address the potential health risks associated with being on the larger side of the scale. Overall, we found this to be a great book and very practical.
Wake Up, I'm Fat!
By Camryn Manheim
Camryn Manheim, who plays attorney Ellenor Frutt on The Practice, has written a funny and honest memoir. If you are looking to connect with someone who has accepted her body and said to heck with it, then this book is an absolute must read. In addition to her true-life story, some Hollywood gossip and absolutely hysterical stories, you get the real message of the book. Finding value in yourself as a human being regardless of what the scale says. We enjoyed this book immensely and highly recommend it.
Well Rounded: Eight Simple Steps for Changing Your Life...Not Your Size
By Catherine Lippincott
The theme of this book, simply put, is for women to accept and enjoy their size 14-plus bodies. Lippincott, a size 16 and a successful model, gives a lot of ideas to help you boost your self-esteem. We found the toolbox sections to be really useful. Lippincott also offers fashion advice, but we found that it was the same "uniform" advice given in so many books. Overall, we liked the content, but in areas we felt it fell flat. A good read, but rent it from your local library instead of buying it.
