The Solution: 6 Winning Ways to Permanent Weight Loss
By Laurel Mellin
In this book, Laurel Mellin has identified six root causes of the behaviors that lead to obesity. The main focus is on identifying what is causing you to overeat and how to change those behaviors to help you lose weight. Instead of giving you diets that you will never stick to, it gives you support for the emotional issues that drive you to eat. We feel it is a good resOurce for those looking to work on the emotional aspects behind their obesity.
The Hungry Gene: The Science of Fat and the Future of Thin
By Ellen Ruppel Shell
Shell explores the issue of overweight and obesity from many angles including how genetics, pharmaceutical companies, the food industry and social class can all factor in. This is not quick-fix diet book but rather a science journalist's study. While we didn't agree with all aspects regarding her feelings on special interests, this book definitely contained some good information.
Emotional Eating: What You Need to Know Before Starting Your Next Diet
By Edward Abramson
First, it is important to note that this book is not strictly about obesity. A variety of common eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia and compulsive eating are discussed within, although each disorder is not covered in depth. The main aspect of the book is how an emotional eater should identify their emotions before deciding to eat, and how to deal with their emotions. For those looking for help in learning to understand and deal with the emotional aspects of overeating this book will provide you with some good insight.
Understanding Obesity: The Five Medical Causes (Your Personal Health)
By Lance, Dr. Levy
This was an easy to read book that contained a lot of common sense and authoritative information. You could tell from the manner in which he writes that Dr. Levy has really listened to overweight patients and feels that obesity is not a single disorder, but a symptom of many different unique to each obese person as an individual. The sensitivity to the problems that the obese face when attempting to lose weight shown in this book is a breath of fresh air.
Child and Adolescent Obesity: Causes and Consequences, Prevention and Management
By Walter Burniat (Editor), Tim J. Cole (Editor), Inge Lissau (Editor), Elizabeth M. E. Poskitt (Editor)
This book addresses obesity in children and adolescents. We found it to be very comprehensive, covering all aspects of obesity from epidemiology and prevention to recent developments. In addition, it takes a look at the long-term health and social affects being obese as a child or teenager may lead to. While technical in nature, it is a comprehensive guide worth reading.
