Always remember that having weight loss surgery is a decision that can only be made by your doctor, but if you want information about it, you'll find it here.
The Doctor's Guide to Weight Loss Surgery: How to Make the Decision that Could Save Your Life
By Louis, Md Flancbaum, Erica Manfred, Deborah Biskin, Louis Flancbaum
Dr Flancbaum outlines the surgical options, the risks and possible complications, as well as expected outcomes of a gastric bypass surgery. The book also details what to expect before, during, and after surgery and discusses selecting a surgeon, insurance coverage, the surgery itself, pain control, diet, and reoperation. If you are looking for a basic overview of gastric bypass, then you will find it in this book.
I Want To Live: Gastric Bypass Reversal
By Dani Hart
If you are considering weight loss surgery as an option, then this book is a must read. Hart gives an honest and open account in this book. We found it very easy to read and think it should be required reading before opting for surgery.
This is NOT Brain Surgery! A Mental Health Companion for the Gastric Bypass Patient
By Teri Kai Holtzclaw
This is a small book, dubbed by the author as being a primer for those considering weight loss surgery. The book talks about keeping the weight off after surgery, explaining that surgery will not deal with the emotional aspects of why patients are obese to begin with. While we like the idea that someone who has actually had the procedure wrote the book, we found it to be poorly edited and a bit on the preachy side.
A Complete Guide to Obesity Surgery: Everything You Need to Know About Weight Loss Surgery and How to Succeed
By Bryan G. Woodward
Unlike many other books on the topic, Woodward covers all 8 types of weight loss surgery and gives you the pros and cons of each. The book includes the technicalities of the surgery, lists of questions to ask, recipes, insurance information. In short, this book covers most of the basics and will serve well anyone considering weight loss surgery.
Weight Loss Surgery: Finding the Thin Person Hiding Inside You - SECOND EDITION
By Barbara Thompson
This book gives a very good base of information about the entire process of weight loss surgery. Thompson covers everything from the consideration of surgery through insurance, questions to ask before having surgery and what it is like in the hospital. Especially unique was the inclusion of a note from her husband addressed "To All Significant Others". He addresses family members who might be concerned about the dangers of this surgery. However, we didn't like the fact that the book only covered one type of surgery (RNY) and left out all of the other available surgeries. A good read, but definitely not a showcase of all your options.
